Red and green leaf lettuce, but no spinach. Spinach bonds to calcium and prevents proper shell growth. Carrots and zucchini are also good, but should only be fed in moderation.

You can also offer guppies or pond snails, but if you're out of food pellets chances are you don't have access to these.

Believe it or not, your turtle doesn't need to be fed every day and may actually benefit from being fed every two to three days! So don't worry if he or she misses a feeding.

How big is it?

Under 4", Red-ears are carnivores. As they get older and bigger, they start to add vegetation, mostly dark leafy greens, to the diet.

The right diet for young Red-ears is about 1/2 pellets, and 1/2 live or frozen/thawed 'fish foods', like small fish, insects, krill, shrimp, snails, etc.

After 4", add some endive lettuce, or other dark, leafy greens- about 1/3rd or 1/4th of the total diet at first, then up to about 1/2 of the diet when they hot about 7-8".

For the first year, feed daily about an amount the size of their head. After a year, start to skip a day a week. Keep skipping until at about 4 years old and only feeding every 3 days.

Crickets, worms, and romaine lettuce are other good options.
