To add some detail to IfI. You are going to pick up I-255 in Collinsville, IL. You will take the "Memphis" exit at the 55/255 interchange. As you continue south on 255 it will turn you west towards Missouri. You will cross the Jefferson Barracks bridge. You will be able to pick up 55 as IFI described. Watch the signs to make sure you use the south exit. If you take north by accident, not all the exits will offer you the ability to get back on in the south direction.

If you are coming down I-55 you can bypass downtown St. Louis by taking I-255 around the south side and across the river to rejoin I-55 in South County. It is only about 5-10 minutes after crossing the river that you will get back on I-55. This will keep you out of the traffic and congestion of downtown. Most of I-255 in Illinois is not in an urban area so the traffic should not be bad.

looks like if you're going i-39 S, you should be able to pick up I-55S out of Bloomington, and I would just follow that South, straight on thru St Louis...

If its the traffic you don't like, plan on traveling thru major cities while traffic is not at its peak....say after 9, 9:30 am and before 3:30 or 4 or after 6 in the evening...hope this helps...
