I took the coins to the Commonwealth Bank, and I was told that they no longer under any circumstances accept foreign currency coins. I have called several money exchange places around Melbourne and have been told similar. Has anyone had any success with any specific exchange business?

Yes, you are right.

NO banks or foreign exchanges places accept any coins to change currency.
They only accept bank notes.

That's why they have coin donations tins at banks and currency exchange places especially at the airports so you can donate foreign coins instead.

You may have to find someone private to do this for you.
