I was at work at GSA (General Services Administration), US Federal Government in DC...my building was located only about two miles from the Pentagon. My supervisor had his TV on in his office when the airplane hit the first tower. We all thought it was trick TV and/or a stunt that went bad. Then, while the news reporters were discussing the first hit, the second tower was hit!

My oldest son was at (and still does) work at Arlington Cemetary, VA, which is right next to the Pentagon. He was doing grounds work at the iron fence that is shown in the news films. He was on the Pentagon side of the fence!! He told me he had to duck underneath a van that was parked to avoid the falling debris hitting him. For some reason, he had a camera or went to his office and got one. He took 'still' pictures (more than100) of all of the ambulences coming in from I-395 and the rest of the rescue equipment, and each procedure of caring out the injured, treating the injured, and the covered bodies. He assisted in helping numerous injured people until about 7:00 PM that night. I could not reach him because of all the 'phones and communication lines being tied up in our area. His wife and three children were at home in Maryland, but he was able to get a call through to her around 2:00 PM, she said when I was able to get in touch with her after going to my youngest son's home. She did not know he was going to stay and help and did not 'understand' why he did it. I knew. I raised him to be compasionate and to look out for anyone in need if assitance could be offered. I am thankful that he was not harmed. One of his coworkers who lived next door to him, was killed in the Pentagon attack...he had three or four children and his wirfe did not work; several others he knew also died. Another friend of mine from high school had just retired from the Pentagon about a month before the attack. In the area where she had worked, was heavily hit and numerous casulties.

When my job let us leave around 11:00 AM, my coworker who was the Acting Director of the eniter Division, was so upset, she could not get herself together to leave and was in tears, nervous, and scared to leave the building. I told her I was not leaving without her, followed her around the empty office - once cleared of our other coworkers, and helped her get her things together...talking the whole time to her to reassure her we would be okay.

I also called the parents of our mentally disabled employee to let them know he was coming home early, helped him leave, and told the parents what subway to expect him on. I, then, finished getting my coworker together, but we did not leave until about 12:00 PM. I drove to work every day because of my designated disability parking space that was assigned to me.

I got my coworker in my car and proceeded to go four (4) blocks up the street to pick up my youngest son from his job...with my oldest daughter. I was able to speak with him early after the second airplain hit the second Twin Tower. I called him to find out if he knew about it. He didn't, but had one of his supervisors turn their TV on. He told me, then, to get out the building and come pick him up so we could get out of the area. It took me from 12:15 PM until 1:45 PM to get four (4) blocks up the street in my car! It had taken 15 minutes to get out of the parking lot! I would have been even later if I had not used some unorthodoxed means of maneuvering through the traffic. When I got to my son's building, my oldest daughter had also made it to his job. We all proceeded to go toward my youngest daughter's high school to get her; and in the interim, dropped my coworker at a safe subway station out of harm's way, as per her request, after calming down.

We reached my youngest daughter's school around 3:30 PM...only about 5 miles away from where we were. My youngest daughter's school was not releasing any students unless the parents came directly to the school and picked them up. It took forever to get everyone together, but we were blessed and not harmed!

When we got to my youngest son's home, we all hugged each other at the same time and cried. We were very glad we were all together, knew where my oldest son was (and safe), and all were not harmed. I did not leave his home until about 11:00 PM. I don't remember, now, but I believe I did not have to go in to work the next day or so.

It was night where I live and my son rang and told us to turn on the tv. I couldnt believe my eyes. I saw the 2nd plane and a moment later a fireball and I thought they were replaying the earlier event. It took me a few minutes to realise that both towers had been hit.
I had to stop watching after a while I couldnt bear it. I would love to visit the site today and pay my respects but I live in australia so I dont suppose that will happen.
Have the powers that be decided on a memorial yet. I think it should be left as a park for people especially children to fill it with fun and laughter.

I was sitting in my Psychology class my senior year of high school. My teacher turned on the TV and we watched for most the day. Everyone was in shock at first and the mood was very solemn. Between that and the Columbine shootings I found out about some really bad things while at school. For Columbine we went on automatic lockdown as well though because I live in the same county as it. Talk about being scared not knowing if you were about to go through the same thing you were watching on TV!

I was at work as the receptionist when I heard a co-worker tell other folks that a plane hit the WTC. At first I thought it was a small plane, no big deal. Then Michael, who learned more, filled us in. We turned on the radio to get live coverage since the internet was jammed up. I remember the broadcast by Dan Rather when he said the first tower had fallen. It was a scary day. Then we heard about Pennsylvania. One of our company's owners was scheduled to fly here from Newark the same morning around the same time. Obviously he wasn't able to board, but it was good to hear his voice when he called from the airport. I asked him, kinda sheepishly, "Are you ok?" And he said, "I'm fine. I'm alive." It was very sobering.

I was panicking because I was supposed to take a chemistry test that day, and it was canceled. Instead, we all watched in shock as the second plane hit the twin towers. School was about that event for the rest of the week.

I was at work...I had no idea what was going on. I was opening the bank early that day. I was having a meeting and no one showed up. At first I was angry, then i started to worry. Finally one of my staff showed up late and told me they tried to call me but the phone lines were tied up and to put the tv on. I did and then my heart stopped. My mother was on a flight to come home and I heard a plane went down in PA and I was panic stricken. Finally I found out that her and my grandmother were trapped on a tarmac in Las Vegas. The phones were ringing off the hook because of a fear of banks being targeted. The branch I worked at was about a mile away from an atomic power plant and we were evacuated. I lived about a mile away from an airport.

I remember going home and sitting outside of my front porch to get away from the television and the silence from the lack of airplanes was deafening. It was a horribly emotional day. It hurt to watch the news, but you couldn't not watch it.

I was asleep and first started to figure out something weird was going on when I turned on the radio station I worked for and they were playing the news (we were an all-music station and we didn't have news outside of "morning drive" so I knew something was up...)

I had to ask the DJ I relieved what had happened because they didn't recap it...
