If you are incorporating or forming an LLC, go to http://www.dos.state.ny.us/corp/corpwww.html , the New York Department of State website and click Search the Corporation/Business Entity Database from the menu on the left. Type in the name you want. Make sure to change the choice underneath from Active Only to All and search. Good luck :)

Check the New York State Department of State's Corporation & Business Entity Database at http://appsext8.dos.state.ny.us/corp_public/corpsearch.entity_search_entry to start with.
However, since the website states that "All other entities such as general partnerships, sole proprietorships and limited liability partnerships file an assumed name certificate directly with the county clerk in each county in which the entity conducts or transacts business". Which probably means that you'll a general telephone directory search at anywho.com (AT&T online phone directory) or www.switchboard.com (another telephone directory.
Good luck!
