America is not sexually repressed, it just seems that way.

A lot of the the comments about being founded by folks who though their old countries were not religious enough is true, but you have to remember that America is a huge place, and many of the communities are small and isolated, and thus the attitudes in them are the same as small and isolated communities everywhere.

The big difference is, that America has never had a war, Civil war was so long ago it does not count, unless you are being bombed and lots of troops stationed all over the place, you society will never start to break down, and thus the little old ladies of America are living the same life that their grandparents lived. That chain of customs has not been broken, thus the ideas and moral benchmarks for much of rural America has not changed in over 150 years.

America is not repressed, it just did not go through the 60's like the rest of the world did. Sure - In California and near to New York there was some change, but in middle America, there was not the structural devastation and social upheaval of Europe and Asia. American troops returned from the war to a world that was identical to the one they had left. Thus the teenage revolution that their children started did not stick, the children found it easier to move to the coast, and leave the backwoods unaltered.

The US was initially settled by people who left England for religious reasons. The thing is, they didn't leave because they felt it was too religious. They left because they thought it wasn't religious *enough*. It's just been down hill from there.

Sex is good for the wealthy who can afford STD screening and meds.

Sex is bad for the poor who get infected and die.

Helluva lot more poor than wealthy.
