I had a HSG done earlier this year. You lie down on a metal bed and prop you legs up, they wipe your vagina with some fluid I think an anti-bacterial. They insert a tube into your vagina and clamp it inside, I felt sharp pains from this point. They then opened up the inside with the clamp and you feel pressure in your tomach like you are having very severe period pains. They then release the dye into your vagina and you get to see it on the monitor whether the dye flows freely into both of your fallopian tubes. If it does it means there is no blockage and sperm will have no problems going into the fallopian tubes. If the dye does not flow into the tube they could be partially or full blocked, it can happen to one and not the other, or both tubes. The whole thing lasted about 10 minutes. Afterwards I only had a bit of spotting for a few hours and I had cramps like period pains the rest of the day. It really felt like I had my periods. It can be painful but you just grin and bear it once the procedure is over you should be fine, its nothing you cant handle. You should wait about 3-4 days or whenever you feel comfortable to have sex again. Hope it goes well.

I had mine done last July. It was painful, well, there are 3 slightly painful parts--the first is when they start putting the catheter through your cervix-pinches but not bad, about like a pap smear. Then when they inflate the little balloon--it feels like a light menstrual cramp way down low. Then the third part when they start pushing the dye in hurts. Some women say watch the dye go through on the screen, but I just held hubby's hands and closed my eyes. The had me roll slightly to one side and within a minute or so it was over. One tip--when it gets a little painful your reaction will be to reach down and grab your lower tummy where it hurts--don't do this! They will have to repeat it if they don't get a clear picture.
My RE told me I could have sex and take a bath, instead of a shower, when the bleeding had completely stopped for 24 hours. I bled very very lightly for about 4-6 hours after the hsg. Good luck and if you are really nervous or think you will be really nervous, call your doc, they can call in a xanax or valium for you to take before the procedure.

I had one two months ago. I felt almost nothing. It hurt very little and it was over very fast. It is completely worth it. If you want to you can take pain killers ahead of time but I did not and it did not hurt me. Maybe I have good pain resistance, but i just think it does not hurt. The doctor did not tell me to wait to have sex. I did not bleed at all.
God loves you

I had one in Jan. It's not bad at all. The procedure it self should take less than 20 min. it is uncomfortable, with some quick sharp pains, but not bad. after the procedure you might need to wear a pad because the dye they inject will leak out. also I took 2 Motrin to help the minor cramping after.
try not to be scared. It really is not that bad. Plus it helps some people conceive, because they 'blow' out your tubes
Good Luck
