I guess I should have added one when I got married last year and went through all that name-changing b.s., but I did not at that time. Now I regret it. My maiden last name was very unusual while my married last name is very common. Since taking that name, I have been confused with others at the doctors' office, etc.

Anyone know how to go about this? I haven't been able to find the answer to this anywhere. Most people already have middle names...

Go to your local Clerk of Courts office. You will need to appear before a judge to do this.

I legally changed my surname about 10 years ago. It was $125, I think, and I had to sign a form that says I wasn't trying to defraud anyone and I wasn't trying to avoid arrest. I also needed two witnesses to appear in court with me to attest I wasn't defrauding anyone.

I can totally see why you'd want to add a middle name if you have a common last name.

If your maiden name was unusual and your want to use it you can use your maiden name as a middle name. To do that you need to petition to change it. Check with your local Bar Association; go on line, contact your local court house. These are some of the things you can do.

So why do you need one? At 48, I haven't ever had one and am doing fine without it.

If you really desire to add one, you may do a name change through the local courts. In many area you can do this without an attorney.

You can petition the court for a name change. There will be publication, notice, fees, etc.
