I saw it and loved the story, the play and the music. There were a couple of things that were over-the-top, but I know for a fact that a few gestures that fit the over-the-top description were not in the original musical. A friend had seen it when it first came out and then with me several years later and noticed the change. However, in general it's necessary for the story to have the crass along with the more refined, due to the fact that Victor Hugo is specifically showing misery and degradation along with the more noble aspects of people's lives. The story itself shows the triumph of love over hate, good over evil, right over wrong; overcoming obstacles and horrible circumstances.

And you.....actormyk.....are you implying the Les Mis is better than the Phantom? You have absolutely no proof that there couldn't have been a man living under the Opera de Garnier.....He is displeased with you...... anyway.. I like Les Mis alright. It has some good songs, a good villain.. etc. The only thing that bothers me is the sort of shift in storyline. If you weren't paying attention you might think you walked into the wrong theater after intermission. The storyline takes off in such a completely different direction... in the beginning its all about Jean, then Cossete and the war, and then at the top of Act II, all of a sudden its this big romantic love triangle story that just popped out of nowhere....it seems a little disjointed to me.... other than that It's alright..... worth seeing.

They weren't ladies. Victor Hugo wrote it in a very direct style and the composers kept that alive for the musical version.
I have never seen it in Broadway, but I have seen it in the West End in London and in a couple of tours. Check out the original French recording if you can get hold of it. It is very changed. And yes, it is originally French.
It happens to be my favourite musical of all time, it is particularly dark but that's appeals to me

I saw this play one night and Phantom the next. As excellent as they both were, I couldn't help but feel that there wasn't really a man living under the Paris Opera House, but there really were (still are) student revolutionaries who believe strongly in causes. It made it more personal to me.

Yes. Aside from some of the highly over the top scenes, it's still a fantastic show to watch.
