A pap smear is a test to see if the cells around your cervix (the opening to your uterus) have been altered at all by STDs or cancer. They cannot tell by that test alone whether you have had sex, but any decent doctor will ask you if you have. They are sworn by law not to tell anyone what you tell them unless it directly harms someone else, so even if you tell them that you have had sex, there is no way that they would be allowed to tell your parents or your family. As for the process, they will put in a speculum (a metal or plastic stretcher) so that they can see your cervix. It shouldn't hurt, but it will feel uncomfortable. They then use a brush at the end of a stick to brush some of the cells off of your cervix. That's it. The whole process of a pap shouldn't take more than like 3-5 minutes. They will also likely take this opportunity to swab the area to test for STDs if you are sexually active, and then they will use their fingers to do a bimanual exam afterwards to make sure that you don't have an enlarged uterus or any masses on your ovaries.

Yes the OB doc can tell if you are a virgin. The doc will check the Hyman, a small piece of flesh that females are born with, the hyman is torn when a female has sex for the first time. Process. Undress, eveything off, on the table, legs in stirrups, a doc and a nurse will be in the room with you. Your bottom has to be at the edge of the table. The doc will wear gloves and shine a light down so he can see the coloring of the skin and look for any lesions. The doc will place an instrument inside your vagina which will open up and allow the doc to put 3 fingers inside, uncomfortable, but not painful. IThe doc will feel for any lumps or cysts, Uncomfortable but not painful. It will only take a minute, the doc uses a long Q tip and scrapes a sample of cells from inside the lining. All done get dressed.

What your mother wants to have you get is a 'pap smear' ... and the doctor can 'tell' if you are a virgin or not, but the doctor can NOT tell anyone, even your mother, if you tell the doctor not to mention it. A 'pap smear' is when the doctor puts a speculum in your vagina, and then uses what looks like a really LONG cotton swab to get some of the 'tissue' from your cervix. The test is done to see if you have cervical cancer. It may be that your mom doesn't want you to have a 'pap smear' but a 'pelvic exam' ... which is basically the same thing, but the doctor will 'look inside' you and do some other tests, too. Again, if you don't want the doctor to tell your mom anything, then TELL THE DOCTOR that anything found is 'privileged information' and the doctor can't tell your mom or anyone (except the police/courts in some legal cases).

The Pap smear is a screening technique. It is used to detect cervical cancer or cervical abnormalities that might become cancer in women who don't have any symptoms of these conditions.

Will the doctor be able to tell that I’ve had sex?
Not generally. Even if your hymen is broken, many different things can lead to that, and some girls are born without one anyway. So just because you’re hymen is torn/missing, he cannot assume that you’ve been having sex. Again, however, you should not hide the fact that you are sexually active from your doctor.

They can tell if your hymen has been broken, but they can not tell your mom, you have patient rights to privacy. They will lay you back on your back with your feet up and legs spread. They will gently insert a speculum into the vagina, open it (You will feel uncomfortable) and they will look inside at your cervix. They will take a small brush (Smaller than a pencil) and insert it into the cervical os (opening) and twirl it to collect cells. they will also take 2 qtip samples one inside the os, and one around the cervix. This all takes about 5 min. However, please tell the doctor it is your first one. Also, be prepared to wait. They will have you strip down and lay down. Than once the doctor is ready, they will put your feet up. There should be a female nurse present with a male doctor, if not, insist on one. Hope this helps.

A papsmear is a vaginal exam. Yes they can tell if you've had sex or not, but they'll probably tell your mother to leave the room and then ask you if you're sexually active. During this time, you can probably ask the doctor not to tell your mother, if that's what you're afraid of. I'm not sure exactly what the process is though, because I've only had one papsmear, but I know that it's not that painful, it's just a little uncomfortable. Good Luck.

A pap smear is a test where cells from the cervix are checked for abnormalities that could lead to cancer. Pap tests to NOT check for STDs or other gynecological problems.

I don't know how old you are, but I doubt you're old enough for one. The US guidelines for when to start getting pap tests are "age 21 or THREE YEARS AFTER first vaginal sexual intercourse."

they can't actually tell that you have had sex if your hymen is broke possibly but that can break doing other things as well. A pap smear will help you catch something wrong before it gets worse. It is a little bit uncomfortable but it is for your health. If they can tell you have had sex they can not tell anyone but you. Do not lie to your doctor about it either.

Other problems can exist in the vagina without having sexual intercourse. A papsmere gives you the potential opportunity to take care of it early on.

A Pap smear is a test that is done on the material that is obtained from the cervix. This it the entry to the uterus at the end of the vagina. (named after Dr. Papaniculou)
It is done by gently rubbing a small wooden spatula and obtaining cells from there. These are put on a microscope slide and looked at for abnormal cells. It is meant as an early detection for cervical cancer.
When the doctor does the pelvic exam, he/she can see if you have ever had sex (torn hymen) and if very recently, if you have had unprotected sex (semen).
