I live in an older house with interior doors that are an inch thick. They currently have strap hinges that I would like to replace with something less ornate / visable. Any ideas?

Certainly......... There are dozens of sizes of flat fold hinges 2 hole 3 hole etc. that perform just like Regular Door hinges. They are sold in both solid and loose pin styles. I use them all the time in Theatrical construction. At any HD or Lowes, etc. You may find STANLEY in a brass finish,,even in plastic packaging OR in a Mill finish in any size you wish. 3 inch would likely be appropriate.

You may have to determine in the hinge placement areas need to be routed or chiseled, but depending on the spacing around the door to the frame, that may not be neccessary.

Whay you might try is removing a strap hinge...attach the folding hinge and testing clearance etc., allowing that the door can still HANG, before you got all out stripping everything down.

Check into what is called Barrel hinges you may need to use 4 of them for a door this size they are generally used for cabinet doors. These mount by drilling into the edge of the door and casing and are hidden, or check into pivot hinges they mount on the top and bottom of the door and are hidden as well. Check www.rockler.com.

Use regular pin hinges You can always grind them thinner to match the width of the door.

You can use flat hinges. You can also make a 4" frame around your door, that would make it seem bigger and nicer. Good luck!
