why is people scared of venomous snakes?

People who grow up in area with a lot of poisonous snakes like Nigeria have a perfectly valid reason for fearing snakes - because most of the ones they see are very deadly. I knew someone who grew up there and is afraid of anything bigger than an earthworm.

As far as the rest of us we have heard too many poisonous-snake stories and always think we just spotted one (although they are relatively rare in most areas.) A lot of non-poisonous snakes will make noises and shake their tails like rattlers or will mimic the colors of ones like coral snakes because that is their defense mechanism against people.

Probably because they are venomous and a single bite can cause death or from the less venomous severe pain and other lovely side effects...I hate all snakes, very fearful of them so if I saw a poisonous one I would run like h$%#!

People are (not "is") scared of venomous snakes because they are dangerous. Snake venom can be deadly and most people are afraid of dying.

Because you could die if you are bitten. I read in a book by Carl Sagan that primates have been shown to have 3 primal fears:

1) heights
2) the dark
3) snakes

Of course, the book is 20 years old, so the research may be outdated.

'Cause they bite. And hide. In the dark. They will hide deep in the grass (or any cozy place) and bite you in the dark. Then they will chase you... to bite you some more. And all the while, you run in a circle screaming SNAAAAAAAKE!!!
