Well, I definitely think that the families and friends of victims should be given the choice to gather and remember, reflect and share each other's experiences. It is a horrible way to lose loved ones I have lost many loved ones, but not in such a horrible way. I do believe (and hope) that schools will prepare some kind of programs to make students a part of the experience through memorials, reflecting back, and perhaps in the process teaching them some kind of compassion and empathy for the tremendous loss that so many people suffered as a result of these brutal terrorist attacks. Reflecting back, I remember that I was hopping on one foot and standing at a bus stop to see my doctor because I was not driving at that time, and I had broken an ankle falling down the front steps the night before on 9/10/01 when I was taking my dog out and got tangled in his chain. My partner ran to the bus stop just in time as the bus was almost there to tell me that my doctor had closed his office to be with his family. She said come home, something horrible has happened. She was so upset that she ran home and left me to hop all the way back, but when I finally got there, I found that the second tower had been attacked; How small my problem seemed at that point, how little my pain mattered. School is a good place to learn how significant, how frightening and how heart wrenching this was for all who were personally involved, and how important it is for students to learn the importance of protecting our freedom. It shows that the wars are not always "out there somewhere" and can affect us personally in the blink of an eye. There may come a time when there is a "9/11 Memorial Day" when the schools are closed, but that has to be approved by the government. Something of this gravity should be a day of reflection and reverence for many people who risked and many who lost their lives and loved ones. We celebrate their lives, and we mourn the horrible way that they ended. I believe that it is worth considering, but of course the government has to decide whether or not there will be a no-school day for 9/11.
May they all rest in peace, and may their friends and families find some solace in knowing that they have our sympathies and prayers...CAS44077

I think that 3000 people die every day from preventable causes.
i think that 3000 children have died of cancer since 09-11-01, and GWB has made stem cell reserch- the potential salvation of those children- illegal, even though his OWN SISTER died of cancer at age 7. I think if there was a 'devil' he would be it, if he isn't too stupid to qualify.
And I think '9/11' has been exploited enough.

Go to school, sweetie. A day off won't improve your life in the long run, or honor any one else's. I lost a very good friend and several aquaintances that day- I know what my friend Harry would say-
Life goes on.
You do not honor the dead by being still- you honor the dead by living.

Of course you should be in school. What better way to HONOR THOSE WHO DIED? Do we have a holiday for the attack on Pearl Harbor? Of course not.

Those people who died were educated. You don't see a lot of dummies working in the World Trade Center. Having a day off is an insult.

What about all the battles in every war that we've had, i mean thousands of people lost their lives why not skip those days also? We all should just get over it. It was a horrible day but not one that should allow us to skip school.

9/11 was a shock, but there have been other days, in WWII, when more died.
I'm not for having a day off school, but your idea of spending time with family and honoring the dead is a good one.

I cannot speak for the children in the US but in the UK children already have far more holiday time than they deserve. Maybe all schools in both countries should have a minutes silence in their school.

Yes, school. As a teacher, I will address the situation and let kids ask questions and discuss the incident.
