The purpose being an effort to regain possession of the ball on a kick off, in place of normal means of turn over on downs, fumble/interception etc. Usually attempted by an underdog to gain ground on their opponent near end of game in hopes of coming back to win the game. But as in a fake punt attempt, it is performed during any point of the game in hopes of catching an opponent off guard.

The purpose of an on-side kick is to recover the football, preventing the other team from gaining possession. Most teams only try an on-side-kick when the time on the clock is about to expire and they are only down by 8 points or less.

Usually if a team is behind, but just scored, and time is running out, they will try an on-side kick. This basically means that the kicker tries to kick the ball into the first line of defenders and hope they lose control of the ball and their team recovers possession. The ball must go at least ten yards, or else it is a penalty.

As many people have stated, the purpose is for the kicking team to regain posession of the ball...
According to wikipedia:
"Onside kick is a term used in American football and Canadian football for a play on a kickoff in which the ball is kicked a shorter distance than usual in order for the team that kicked it to try to regain possession of the ball."

The kicking team is hoping to get the ball back. If the ball hits one of the members of the receiving team and the kicking team then gets it they then have possession. To do this they kick the ball low and aim at the opponents blockers, hoping to bounce it off of one of them. This is a desperation play (typically seen late in a game) since it rarely works and when it fails your opponent gets the ball much closer to your goal than with a regular kick.

It gives the kicking team a better chance of recovering the kick. Whichever team gets the ball on a kick-off is the team that gets possession, as oppose to a punt where the receiving team gets the ball(unless they touch it first) where the kicking team touches it.

It's a 10 yard kick off designed for late game situations in which you are losing, giving you a chance to recover the kick and put you back on offense an in position to score.

the purpose is to get the ball yourself
it is usually used with not much time left in the game and if you are loosing. the risk is that if you do an onside kick and lose the ball, the other team has an easy opportunity to score

so the kicking team can try to recover the ball by kicking it a short distance down the field.

when you kick the ball (which must go at least ten yards) hopefully the other team won't get a firm grab on the ball and you make that team fumble and you recover the ball
