If an automatic could be tranny slipping. Check the fluid

If the rpm counter is of cable type, the cable may have a loose connection (Through wear), or age. If it is electrically operated, the problem could be a RELAY, or a fault in the ECM, (engine computer management), "Electrical device", usually found in engine compartment or under the dash trim in the car. Best seek advice from auto electrician. in case of continuing related problems progress.

The answer could be that a gear has cracked within the instrument and is causing a rough drive to the needle. I had this happen on a speedo and the cure was replace the gear.

sometimes the problem may be that you are using too much electricity in the car such as a/c radio or maybe you have a LCD or powerful speakers in the car.
Also you can install xenon lights that take less energy from the car battery. I purchased a set from http://www.xenonlightshid.com and i noticed my car idles a little less myself.

One of my friends said that his vehicle was doing that and he changed the timing belt and it fixed it... why i dont know and if that was the solution or it was something else i dont know either. anyway If you have not changed the timing belt within 60-100k miles it should be changed.
