no nocturnals. if you say ferret you are going to have to really prove it because my mom says they stink but it was in the pet store and it had lots of crap in the cage.also can ferrets get exercise out of a playpen with lots of toys to play with or do they have to free roam around the house.

I actually have 2 ferrets, and they're adorable and really love people and being held. But it really depends on the ferret.
The ferrets can be trained to go in a "litterbox" in their cage (although I think mine were already trained when we got them or they trained themselves or something because we didn't have to really do anything).
You can keep the ferrets in a cage, most ferrets require an hour a day to run around in a playpen or something for excercise, but some people like to let them run around the house free. If you decide to do that, make sure there aren't any small holes in the walls or anything, because ferrets can fit into almost ANY hole.
About the stink, yes, ferrets do smell really bad. I've heard that the males smell worse than the females. You can bring them to the vet to have their stink gland things removed, and it reduces the smell by a LOT, but not all of it.

The lovability and such really depends on the ferret, though. One of my ferrets LOVES to be held, and is very curious and tries to go wherever it can. The other one is a fat, lazy bum, sitting in its cage and sleeping half the time. xD But I still love them both.

a ferret. pet store ferrets arent taken care of correctly. they stink because the litter is rarely changed, the bedding sucks and is never washed or is non-existant. a wet-ferret is less stinky than a wet dog or cat. they poop in a corner. you can litter box train them. they do get into everything but so do dogs. you must ferret proof a room or house if you want them to roam around. just clean there litter box daily, like take the poop out and wash the pan once a week, wash all the bedding and stuff toys once week clean the entire cage once a month. dont feed them kitty food there poop will end up stinky.

ferrets just need about 4 hours daily to play. they can be in a playpen with another ferret or a tunnel or other toys, you must play with them at least a few hours of those 4. they can be caged while you are away at school or work. they sleep 16 to 20 hours a day. they dont make loud obnoxious sounds like barking or meowing. they arent moody like cats, they play like little puppies or kitties. you would seriously spoil the little fuzzies. please do research! dont get a ferret if you dont want to do mainitance. thats why they stink so bad is because no one ever knows how to fully take care of them! just weekly washings of the bedding will make the house smell so much better. and bathing them once a week to once every two weeks makes the smell go down too and they are sooo cute.

when i adopted my ferret i was afraid he would make my room stinky. but actually his smell isnt as bad as dog poop or cat poop stink. it actually smells better!

here are some good sites you might like to read up on.

and
www.ferret.com

i think the other one i like is www.ferretcentral.com or .org

ps. do get your ferret fixed and descented. it would help the smell, by ALOT.

good luck if you dont decide to get a ferret.

Whether an animal likes to be handled depends on the handler. Are you gentle and soft-spoken? or do you squeeze and yell? Anyway, how about a guinea pig! They're delightful, weigh about 1 lb. Do not need to run around the house. Also, a small cat could work. Good luck.

Ferrets. they are way cool, they are playful, they can be litter trained, and you can make them stink less by cleaning their cage evry other day and spaying them or by nuetering them.
