I think of it, as a review of what we learned in school. That's how I was able to do my work without complaining about homeworks. Well, if the teacher gives a lot of homework, especially math problems that does the same thing over and over again, that's when you should be angry. =P

Practice, as others have said. But don't assume you've learned something just because you've done the homework, or that you haven't learned because you haven't done it.

And a lot of it is just pointless bullsh*t. Actually, a lot of school is pointless bullsh*t. In addition the the material, you're also being taught to follow instructions without questioning, to not stand out, to be a good worker, and to not make trouble for those above you.

When I was in high school, I felt it was my job to distill and retain the useful parts and ignore the rest. I took a lot of flak for this. It drove my parents crazy because I would get As or Bs on tests and Cs or Ds on my report card.

If that sounds like you, you should look into alternative schools, or even homeschooling or unschooling. The thought of leaving the standard educational path might seem strange or scary. Looking back now in my 20s, though, I consider that whole portion of my life to be almost wasted. I wish I'd gone for it back then, because I'm just making up for it now.

Good luck!

You retain the answers. You learn.

One of the biggest lessons in Mathematics was that if you don't do the homework, you're pretty much screwed. It's practice.

When you do the homework it makes it so much easier to get A's without having to cram a whole semester's worth of work a night before the finals.

Stop complaining and go do your homework.

Only the teacher can give you the knowledge. It is up to student to utilize it. Homework is practice of that knowledge.

It is practice. It prepares you for tests. I know, it can be a big yawn, but one day, you will appreciate the work you did and all you learned.
