Ectotherm means the same thing as poikilotherm: an organism (as a frog) with a variable body temperature that tends to fluctuate with and is similar to or slightly higher than the temperature of its environment : a cold-blooded organism.

Fish, frogs, amphibians and reptiles.

I have worked with fish most my professional career. I never call a fish cold blooded. A fish body temperature is very close to the water it is in. So in winter it is cold, but in summer it is hot. I just usually say ectotherm when talking about fish body temperature.

ecto: Greek for outside of, endo: inside of. Therm = heat. So ectotherms derive their heat from outside themselves; essentailly everything that's not a mammal. reptiles for example crawl out into the sun till they heat up and if they get too hot they crawl into the shade.
