I am not sure the world "likes" controversy. Controversy gets attention. If my neighbors are living together peacefully, I would hardly notice. If they get loud through fighting or being obnoxious, they will get my attention.
When there is no controversy, your attention is turned inward, toward your own domestic well-being. Anything which shows up on the radar which bothers that well-being needs attention.
So it isn't that the world likes controversy. The world needs to pay attention to controversy.

That's a good question and I've thought about that myself. Maybe people think everyone is being controversial towards them rather just controversial for the sake of doing so. I thought of it this way. A member of a political party, for example, feels his views and the views of his party are true and acceptable characteristics he wants to reflect to the country. Well, the opposing party feels the same about the the character they represent and want to project. Right there is a controversy, a controversy of ideals. Project this to a larger scale - the world, and ideals will always create controversy with one another because our ideals are different based on culture, religion, and politics. It's not that humans enjoy controversy, it's just always there. Well, maybe some people do enjoy controversy. I see these Goth people, and they go to great lengths to project the image of being controversial to everything acceptable. But it's all done visually to create an instant negative first impression. I don't know why that is.

The world as such doesn't like controversy but groups of people do. haven't you heard the saying "show me one person and I'll show you peace, show me two and I'll show you friendship, show me three and I'll show you war"? It's in the human nature to form groups - we need a sense of belonging and nothing gives us this but the sense of us and them, the good guys and the bad guys. You can see this pattern everywhere - schools, work places, politics and wars.

I didn't know the world liked controversy. I didn't even know the world has likes! It has rivers, trees, people, etc.
If you mean "why do all people like controversy," I didn't know that all people liked controversy. I don't.
I think your question presupposes something that has not been established. To answer your question any better than that, involves accepting your presupposition.
Best,

Society is conforming us to stay in the safe zone, both mentally and physically. In our free time, what little we have, we choose to head out of the spectrum. Contraversey is one way to leave the safe zone.

Like attracts like. Working with dogs has taught me projecting a calm assertive attitude helps neurotic drama addicts to chill. Fear is the mind killer, right?

Boredom, rather the aversion to boredom.
Anyone who dislikes boredom will go about creating thought, beliefs, actions, etc. to combat this.
My recommendations, sit back, relax and learn to enjoy it.
