ok, so Christmas is a ways away but because my budget is so tight and i still want to give thoughtful gifts I thought i should start now. my dad is almost 60 and always says he doesnt "need" anything for Christmas. I want to get him something nice and useful while still maintaining a budget. Any ideas?

Next week, my father and I are going to the movies. We don't spend much time together, and I know he was touched that I asked him to see a movie I know he'd love. I suggest buying a movie gift card, and setting a time to go to a movie with him. . . just the two of you, his choice of flick. Chip in for the popcorn, too. My father and I have some of our best conversations waiting for a movie to begin.

My parents also don't 'need' anything - so instead, we usually try to spend time with them by taking them to a concert or a play or a sporting event and having dinner together.

It seems to have gone over well - we've done it a couple of years now. It's good to spend time together.

Get a swiss army knife and get it engraved. It won't cost much, but will look like it did!

It'll be useful and nice, and whenever he reaches in his pocket to use it - he'll think of you.

Good luck

Polish all of his shoes. I do this every year for my husband for either his birthday or Christmas or our anniversary.

give him a gift certificate book.
have several gift certificates for free things you can do for him or for things you can do together. for example one could say "this certificate is good for one lunch on me"
another could say "good for one day of snow clearing" and another could say "good for one movie with me"
"free car wash from me"
"free house cleaning"
and so on.
