If you are talking about the starter solenoid find the power lead from the battery(its probably red).Using a heavy gauge wire or one jumper cable connect it to the heavy black wire going to the starter.
Be carefull, if its a standard make sure its in neutral. If you are trying to start the car make sure the key is on.
Don't leave the connection for more than a few seconds.
Disconnect as soon as car fires.

Whoa, whoa, do not jump the battery terminal around the solenoid!!!!! Are these people trying to kill you? First off, 10 gauge wire will not carry the amps you need to start a vehicle. Come on, people. 10 gauge? Also, if you have a batter that is emitting gas because the cells are not sealed properly could cause an explosion. Then you will have sulfuric acid all over you. I have literally seen it happen. Your best bet is to replace the solenoid. Is it a Ford, Chevy, etc. These solenoids are inexpensive and not worth taking a shortcut that could injure you. If the solenoid is clicking, the ground could be weak also. It's free to check it at autozone. Please, don't listen to these remedies with jumping the battery to the starter. Not to mention the insulating jacket around the wire could melt to your hand. The copper will be red hot also. Take Care.,,,,,,,

I assume you mean a starter solenoid?
If so find the large post of the solenoid it should connect diretly to the battery through a fusible link or other circuit breaker type device, then the next largest post should connect directly to the starter, just jump the two contacts. or you can run a heavy gauge wire 10 gauge at least from the plus terminal of the battery to the plus terminal of the starter,

sounds like something is wacky with the wiring to the ignition system. when you turn key to the "start" position, it pushes power to both the starter and the ignition system, when you release it and the key returns to the "on" position, it stops pushing power to the starter solenoid, and only sends it to the ignition (distributor/coil) it seems as though the wiring may be in the wrong place. i.e.. not tied into the "on" position, only the "start position". To confirm this, take a wire and tie the positive on the distributor/coil directly to the battery. start the truck. 100:1 says that when you release the key from the start position and to returns to "on" the truck will continue to run. if so, just yank the wire off the battery and it will die. this will confirm that the wiring needs to be traced from the switch to the starter and to the coil.
