about a month or 2 ahead of when your due date is.
you can have it at a church, any kind of a community room, like at a bank or town place. or sumones house that is big enough for 20 or more people.
matters what kind of a party you want.... there is the traditional girls only baby shower... with guessing games and things like that.
but more these days they have a co-ed party with guys and girls....have a barbeque with the guys and guys can play horseshoes outside or whatever... open gifts then play games like sharades..and stuff.
good snacks are always the key to things like this...cake, punch, once cool idea is a choc fountain with strawberrys and bananas laying around.
those are just some ideas..
do stuff that you know people wont be bored...throw things in there that you want to do and look forward to. because most girls dread a baby shower because its too long or too many people or they dont like that their husband wasnt involved and such..

Have limited games. Maybe 2. People get bored. My son was almost 3 months early so my planned baby showers happened when he was still in Children's Hospital. One of the games that my husband's aunt did for mine was putting one small baby item in several brown paper bags and people had to feel the bags and write down the number that was on the bag along with their guess and pass the bags around. The person that guessed the most correctly won a prize and I got to keep all of the stuff in the bags.

My family is out of state, so they threw me a baby shower at 7 months since I shouldn't be traveling much after that. It was in a relatives house. It was a small gathering, they just invited the relatives who meant a lot to me and a couple of my close friends who lived in that state. We had a couple games, but we tried to avoid cheesy one that would bore people. Guessing how big my tummy was was probably the favorite. We had a formal sit down lunch though with an overly extensive full menu. Everyone seemed most impressed by the food since usually baby showers just have finger foods. The best part was no one was checking their watches and trying to sneak out early. We actually had to kick people out after while so I could take a nap since no one was leaving!

I had mine a month before I was due. We just had it at a relative's house. Some games we played were:
-guess the baby food(take the labels off the jarfoods and ppl can either taste or smell to guess what it is)
-guess how much toilet paper it takes to wrap around the mommy's belly(you can use ribbon or whatever)
-a printed out game of guessing what the baby names are for animals
You can find several more on the internet. It's nice to have small prizes for the guests as well. something nice but cheap.

In addition to the things mentioned above, one game that everyone thought was funny and unique was "guess the poop" Get a few diapers and a few different candy bars, stick the bar (minus the wrapper obviously) in the diaper and melt it until you cannot tell what kind it was. Make sure you number them and write down what was in each. At the party, pass the diapers around and whoever can guess the most candybars gets a prize.
Another favorite game of mine (I cant remember if someone listed it already) it the game where everyone gets a safety pin. If a person says baby, they have to give it to whoever noticed. Person with the most pins at the end wins.
I was 6 1/2 months and it was at my sister in laws

I was 9 months pregnant( we waited to last minute for some reason) My best friend threw it at my house. Well we knew its a girl so everything was pink and white we had balloons and streamers. We made little goody bags with mini pacifiers and candys and cookies in them for the people when they left, we had alot of food almost anything you could think of. then we opened presents after sitting around and talking for awhile. There are some cute games i played at other peoples baby showers you cut a piece of ribbon and wrap it around the mom to be belly and then you hide it and ask every one to cut there own piece of ribbon and guess how big they thing it is and who ever is closet wins a giftbag. i thought it was cute. well good luck have a good one.

We also all took along one photo of us as a baby layed them on the floor and had to guess who was who..
