I'm an American living in Prague, so they answer is obvious to me. I witness it every day.
I don't know what it is about our countrymen, but when Americans travel abroad, they seem to switch their brains off. I see tourists here from all over the world, and they have little trouble, but an American can't even seem to open a door without hitting himself in the head with it.
People from Italy, Greece, Spain.... everywhere, intuitively grasp basic concepts, while an American perpetually looks like a helpless child. I have actually seen store keepers just tell the American to put his money on the counter, and they would count it out for the purchase. Somehow, the American cannot understand that if a bill comes to 320 Czech crowns, he can add it up like any other numbers. He just stares blankly at the paper currency and coins as if he has never seen money before in his life.
One time, I was listening to an American stumbling over his words to the patient Czech clerk. It was as if the American couldn't even speak his own language. He wanted something, but couldn't follow the very simple instructions the clerk gave. The clerk then turned to his colleague for help. To let his colleague know they were dealing with a "special child", the clerk only had to whisper two words "He's American". (sigh!)
How humiliating.

I am from the US, and I live in the US. I am actually embarrassed by my fellow Americans when I happen to see them in foreign countries.
Why am I embarrassed? Because they act naive, ignorant, dumb and incredibly stupid. They also, quite often, are extremely rude.
It's like they check their brains at the airport when they travel to a foreign country. The image of the ugly American? The reason why it is alive and well is because every day Americans go abroad and do their level best to reinforce the image. Here are a few of the things I have seen with my own eyes:
--Americans demanding the best table in the restaurant in loud voices, simply because "we traveled all the way from the USA!"
--Americans refusing to offer even the simplest of courtesies, like holding doors for people.
--Americans exclaiming in a loud voice that "your money system is screwed up, you should use dollars, instead." (Which is really stupid, seeing as most foreign countries use a money system which is similar to the American system, in that it is based on 10ths and 100ths.)
--Americans taking photos of people after the people have politely asked them to not take their photograph.
--Americans touching people physically in countries where it is seriously frowned upon.
--Americans refusing to learn even a few words and phrases, and expecting/demanding that they be allowed to speak to someone on the premises who speaks English. They then get angry with the person if their English is not really, really good.
--Americans refusing to eat in a restaurant because all the food is either "weird" or "strange" when they, themselves, were the ones who walked into it in the first place.
--Americans refusing to follow rules, such as refusing to take their shoes off before going into a house of worship where shoes are forbidden. Instead, they simply march right in, shaking their heads at what they consider to be an outlandish request.
My list could go on and on. It makes me wonder why some people travel at all if they aren't interested in learning about other places, people, and customs, and just want everthing and everyone to act like their native land is some remote outpost of the US.

Tell me again how the European Markets tumbled with the news of the sub-prime lenders hit bottom a few weeks ago?
We can't be that stupid, if we control a major part of their markets.
Of course anyone who wears blinders and listens to a handful of anti-American rhetoric overseas really shows true ignorance.
Have you looked in a mirror lately? I think they're talking about you.

Well, to know that you should ask them. But they are all of the above. Just look at the questions and answers you see here, the expressions you see on TV, and, have you ever worked in education in this country ?
