Yeah, you need to talk to a gyno about this. You may have a hormone imbalance or something.

the length of your period depends on loads of different things. if you just started, then its usual for it to be irregular for the first few months to a year, coming and going at all random times, sometimes just 2days, sometimes 2 weeks, this is normal.
if you started ages ago (over about 18 months ago) your period will be evened out about now and if it lasts for 12-13 days every time, then this is most likely your natural pattern. every girl/woman gets a different pattern, depending on your size, weight, age, genes, hormones etc etc.
if you started ages ago and your period has been regular for a while, but suddenly changed, there are several possible reasons for this. maybe you started/stopped taking the pill, maybe your hormones changed as you got older, or maybe its to do with who you're spending time with. Women have these little invisible things that contain hormones and they live on your top lip, under the nose. these move around you in the air, and if you spend time with lots of other girls, (maybe sisters, mum, friends, gran etc) then the air contains everyone elses hormones flying around, so you get a mix - some telling you to have your period now, others next week, others the week after etc, so your body can get confused. if you spend enough time with other girls (maybe share a house/classroom/work area) then your period will become syncronised with everyone elses. your body does this because it has evolved thousands of years to do this, meaning that all the females are fertile at the same time - so when a male turned up all the females could be fertilised at the same time. this can be seen nowadays in animals, but we have still evolved to do this.
i would expect that spending time with other girls is the most likely cause of your change in period pattern, as last october my family had a girl from norway to stay for a year, and my periods suddenly became longer and irregular for about three of four months, then we had our periods at the same time for the rest of the year. it was really strange and it sounds totally unbelieveable but it really happens.
if you havent had changes in who you spend time with, then other causes could be medication you are taking or, in some cases a slight hormonal problem, ie too much oestrogen or something, so if it continues for more than four months, or becomes worse (ie continuous bleeding all month) then you should see your doctor. its nothing to be ashamed of - woman doctors have gone through it, male doctors see it all the time. you're not the only one! they would probably give you the pill to even out your periods, or do some tests. but it'll be fine! give it another two months. and dont worry - stress causes changes too!

If you are just starting out with your period, it could be that your hormones are still adjusting. Same thing if you are in your late 30's or above.

Sometimes women get a week of breakthrough bleeding in addition to their regular period. It's a nuisance, but not necessarily a sign that something is seriously wrong. Talk to your doc about it, or if you're just beginning your periods, give it a few more months to regulate.

I had that problem too. It turned out to be uterine fibroids. I also had heavy bleeding, which you don't, but not everyone gets the same symptoms. Best thing to do is to see your gyno. You might get a 'transvaginal' ultra sound, which is an up close and personal, i.e., internal ultrasound to help determine what's what.

If it turns out it's fibroids, don't worry, they're very common and not dangerous, although they can be inconvenient. I had surgery to remove mine. There are different types of treatment, depending on how much of a problem you're having. Good luck.

This bleeding that you are having is breakthrough bleeding which can act a lot like a period. It can be a symptom of infection. I would recommend seeing your doctor for further evaluation of the situation to see what they think is going on.
