The boot of a car is the trunk. I am American and I learned
this from visiting the UK, British people I've known, and
watching British TV shows.

It is the trunk, and while most folks relate "boot" with the English, it's also used by some folks here in the U.S. For instance, you'll hear boot more than trunk up in the Northern Kentucky/Southern Ohio area.

I learned a few years ago that the boot was the trunk when an Australian friend of mine came for a visit. And he called the hood a bonnet.

Europeans often refer to the "trunk" of the car as the "boot" - it's slang.
