It's a common recommendation these days that people should eat a lot of fiber for colon health, heart health etc. But as we know, foods that are high in fiber often cause flatulence. Beano contains an enzyme that breaks down certain sugars in foods that cause gas. But is Beano breaking down the chemicals that are supposedly good for colon and heart health? In this sense, could be Beano be undermining the health value of high-fiber foods?

Perhaps a good question to ask is: are the chemicals that Beano digests the same chemicals that cause the healthful effects of fiber?

No, it does not. Beano is simply a collection of enzymes that help break down oligosaccharides that humans cannot digest themselves. If left in the digestive system, bacteria that live in our guts will digest those sugars and cause...well...you know.

Fiber is mostly cellulose. Only very few microbes are capable of digesting cellulose, and those enzymes are not contained in Beano. Indeed, one of the benefitial parts of cellulose is that it is essentially non-digestible...it, er...passes out of the body in the same state it came in, often taking some fats like cholesterol with it. Cellulose, since it is so difficult to digest, doesn't contribute to gas very much in humans (it does, however, in ruminants like cows). Some of the sugars that do cause gas, and are targeted by Beano, are things like raffinose and galactose.

I hope this has helped you.
