3x^-2 is the same as 3*(1/x^2)

thus, the answer is 3/(x^2)

I'd think the book wants you to write it without a negative exponent. That means you have to move the exponentiation to the denominator of a fraction.

If you're still stuck at this point, go back to the book and see what negative exponents mean -- that should take care of the "x" part. Now, double-check that you've put the 3 in the right spot (figuring that out is left as an exercise for the student).

thats as simple as it goes

although another way of writing it is 1/(3x^2)
but that's not simplified, just different
