I have a 95 318ti, but what you're facing is similar to what I had to address with my car.

You can get a custom parcel shelf made from MDF and carpeted... at that time I think it cost me £80 from an audio shop. But that was some years back. Alternatively, you can cut your existing factory parcel shelf, and re-cover the top with a thin black fabric that allows sound to pass through (the audio shop guys will have that).

But after experimenting with the 6x9, I reverted back to some higher end speakers (I enlarged the factory holes a little to fit). I dropped the speakers from the top instead of from the bottom since the factory speakers had a custom angled mount. I didn't even bother to install speaker grills because there was so little space left. But since it's way in the corner, it's not even noticeable.

And I added a small powered sub in the corner of the boot instead. I recommend the Infinity Basslink II. But any other small unobtrusive sub or basstube will work fine. Try to make use of the small space right behind the taillights to maximize boot space.

I would imagine the same would also apply to the 2002 compact.
