Hi does anyone know for sure which would be the most visable beam on a green laser
532nm 240mw or 532nm 8mw
I was working on the angle that the higher the Mw the more powerful the beam.....is this correct

Yes, the higher the mW rating, the more powerful the beam.

240 mW is 30 times more powerful than an 8 mW beam (and it is precisely so, since the wavelengths are the same).

The only thing that would make the 240 mW beam apparently less powerful, is some kind of lens that diverged the 240 mW beam, while the 8 mW beam remained collated.

As far as i know the longer the wavelength the lower the energy ie shorter wave length would have more power as it is inversely proportional... the more powerful the beam though wouldn't necessarily make it more vi sable as it would absorb Ina different part of the spectra.....check through some journals on science direct to see of anyone has done anywork on something like that before.......

Is the power rating the electrical input power or the optical output power?
If it's the input power you have to consider the conversion efficiency.
If it's the optical power, the 240mW is more powerful than the 8mW.

240mW is the most powerful, as said above.
But what do you want to do?
If it is for "show", you will be ok with a standard (nearly safe) 5mW, or probably even with a 1 or 2mW. Any power above is dangerous:
I used a 3000 WATT (yes, 3kW!) for (some) tests: it pierced hardened steel like a hot knife on butter, and had to be kept in a bunker with armed guards!

Yes, it is. And you might be well-off with the lower powered one. Even 8 mw is more than enough to cause permanent eye damage.

Nobody should own one more than 5MW. There is no practical need for more power and they can be dangerous.
