You'll need the following:
1) Player's Handbook - all players need this book as it lays out the main rules and how to create a character. All players need this book, or at least access to a copy.
2) Dungeon Master's Guide - only one player needs this book, and it contains rules and information on hosting the game.
3) Monster Manual - This book is also for the dungeon master, and you only need one copy. It contains information about creatures your character can encounter.
4) Paper and something to write with. Again, all players need this.
5) A set of dice. You will need at least 1 each of the following dice: 4-sided, 6-sided, 8-sided, 10-sided, 12-sided, and 20-sided. If you can manage it, have multiples of each, and enough to go around. These should be available where you buy the game.
Optional:
1) Be sure to get the version 3.5 books, as these are the most current. Although a new version will be out next year. At least, make sure your three core rule books are from the same version and that everyone is using the same rules edition when you play.
2) Basic Game - If you've never played this type of game before of if you find it too difficult to learn at first, start with the Basic Game. It will get you up to speed on the simple stuff quickly.
3) Dungeon Master Deluxe Screen - a quick reference tool the host may find convenient.
4) Miniatures - You may also find it convenient to use miniatures to help keep track of locations during tactical combat. There's no need to "collect them all", you can substitute as needed or even use small coins or glass tokens to keep track of relative locations.
5) Map sheets or tiles. Same reason as the miniatures above, but it is just as easy to keep track on regular paper, if you're on a budget or just want to play more casually.

The Dungeon Master's Guide, the Player's Handbook, and the Monster Manual.
The DM should read through all three quite thoroughly, and the players should at least read through the Player's Handbook thoroughly.
Thanks to websites that contain random number generators, dice are no longer required--but always wonderful to have. You should have at least the following: 1-20 sided die, 1-12 sided die, 2-10 sided dice, 1-8 sided die, 4-6 sided dice, 1-4 sided die.
The more the merrier.
