I found it to be a very touching movie. it came out on tv a few years back. although it had a terrible portrayal of Bahrain, it was still a pretty good movie. I was pretty bothered by the fact that even tho this marine risked everything, his bride still wanted a divorce 5 years later. Its almost impossible to see that coming, after how in love and happy they were. They were all over the media. He said that she was plunged into the Vegas nightlife and then they grew apart. It is very said to see such a beautiful thing come to an end. She supposedly flew back to her native country. Very disturbingly sad. Does anyone know what happened to them both. Do you think they faked the divorce to ward off the death threats and hit men sent by her family???

Yes, saw it on the Lifetime station. however i prefer the actual interviews on them done by the newsmagazine shows like Dateline, Primetime, and 20/20 etc. On these shows you could see how they really were together, and the reactions of his family (one female family member, in an amusing manner, said something like Meriam may be a princess in her homeland but over here she has to cook, wash the dishes and do cleaning like many other housewives). They were shown living modestly and many people had a strong sense that it would end in divorce for reasons including:

1) They were religious and cultural differences (he was a mormon, she was Muslim).
2) In Bahrain, the princess had status and wealth, she lived a life of luxury that included being waited on hand and foot by servants. In America, most of that high-style glamorous living was gone, they couldn't afford much of the extras on his salary which came from regular civilian jobs including parking cars.
3) His dream was to be in the marines, and now he found himself dishonorably discharged, likely there were times when he felt some resentment during the marriage as to whether the loss of that career was worth the relationship.
4) The Princess had younger siblings that she wasn't allowed contact with after she eloped, she had to miss them terribly.
5) Likely, she begain to compare what she had over there (family and weath etc) with what she had over here and determined that she made a miscalculation, her young teen love for him eventually wasn't enough to compensate for her losses. Also they might have found out that they just weren't compatible enough and grew apart.

Not likely someone was hired to harm her, but since she faced charges of illegally entering the U.S and deportation proceeding, the couple told Immigration that she was in harm's way from her family and revealed the assassin story. She was given political asylum and received a green card. Later, she resumed communication with her family in June '01 (reportedly, she and her husband were already considering divorce). When 9/11 happened, her parents asked her to come home because they were concerned for her safety because of possible violence towards people of Middle-Eastern heritage and she quickly returned to Bahrain in Sept. '01.
