He had really bad back problems so they made a storyline which Cena beat him that who ever loses has to quit. Or rey..I forgot.

He was having really bad back problems, and he isn't able to wrestle anymore without risking serious injury. A one time match might not be out of the question, but his wrestling days are pretty much over.

because jbl had suffed a back injury to where he cant wrestle anymore so he had no choice but to retire as a wrestler and he wanted to stay in the industy so he became a commenter

he didnt rey beat him in a match which forced him to retire after a deal he had amde w/ teddy if jbl won he got the WHC if rey won jbl would hafe to retire HE DID NOT BREAK HIS BACK!!

He was injured and needed to take REAL good care of his injured back. He even has a special machine to help him. Even though he can't wrestle anymore, they still wanted to use his GREAT mic skills to make the fans mad. :)

basically numerous injuries mostly his back made him retire plus he was gettin older but hes AMAZING behind the mic with the great one liners and just plain puttin things over

He didnt have a choice. I believe he broke his back. so it was either sit at home and do nothing or still be involved somehow in the industry he loves.
