He must choose how much to keep for himself and how much to give to you.
He can be as selfish or as generous as he likes, with one proviso: if you refuse his offer, neither of you gets any money at all. What would it take for you to turn him down?

If he offered me less than £10 then I'd probably just accept it, although I can imagine that some mean characters may anger me enough in the few seconds I'd spent with them for me to decide to stop them getting any by turning it down. May also depend on the day I'd had!

If he offered me £5 I'd accept and think that he'd made the right choice.

If he offered me more than £5......well, I wouldn't turn it down, but would feel kind of uncomfortable.

So.......what would you do? Or what did you hope to learn from our answers?

I would not normally take anything from a stranger. In this instance, the other person might be in great need of £10, so I would accept, and even if I did not get very much or any at all, the other person would still benefit.

I would add to the question that you should not know what he is going to offer, you simply chose without knowing.
As your question is stated I would agree to any offer as:
1. I might get something.
2. It does not harm me if he takes it all, as I have not lost anything.
Your question reminds me of the Prisoner's Dilemma (check out Wikipedia for a very interesting article on this).

He had better decide that my share would be nothing or that is exactly what he would get. I would not accept a share in an amount of money so small as to not improve my standard of living from anyone except a very close friend.

I would take any money offered, nothing wrong with that. I don't see the point in snubbing any money, as it may be useful in it's own little way.

It's pretty ignorant to think.. it's just a little money. Clearly quite spoilt individuals.

If I am sitting next to a stranger and am given £10 to share with with .....whom?

Is this stranger the one I'm being given the money by or...?

Is there someone missing from this picture?

that would depend on whether I knew he was sharing out $10. If I did, then less than $5 and I would turn him down.

I would tell the stranger "Give me no money friend, for this shall be the secound gift to you today, so that later you may have one gift to keep and one to pass on."

If a strange gives me money on a train...I'm going to think that it is very odd and that he/she is up to something or that someone with a camera is going to jump out and do and say something

Would take whatever he offered as it would be more than I had before and good health and happiness far outweighs money any day.
