The sky appears blue because of the light from the sun is scattered by small particles in the atmosphere. The amount of scattering depends upon the wavelength .Accordingly the blue light which has the lowest wavelength in the solar light spectrum is scattered the most.So the sky looks blue. This also explains why the sky is red at sunset. The light has to travel through more atmosphere before it reaches us, at the time of sunset. So the blue light is completely scattered away by that time and only the red light remains

The blue color of the sky is due to Rayleigh scattering. As light moves through the atmosphere, most of the colors pass straight through. Little of the red, orange and yellow light is affected by the air.

However, much of the shorter wavelength blue color is absorbed by the air molecules. The absorbed blue light is then reflected in different directions. It gets scattered all around the sky. Whichever direction you look, some of this scattered blue light reaches you. Since you see the blue light from everywhere overhead, the sky looks blue.

As you look at the horizon, the sky appears much paler in color. To reach you, the scattered blue light passes through more air. Some of it gets reflected in other directions. Less blue light reaches your eyes. The color of the sky near the horizon appears paler or white.

The sky is blue because the wavelength of the blue color is the same as the size of the oxygen, thus causing it to scatter and spread. This is also why liquid oxygen is blue.

It has to do with the way the Nitrogen molecules in the air bend wavelengths of light from the sun.
