Many new Balkan countries emerged when Yugoslavia split up due to Civil War. Among these countries are Croatia, Macedonia, Serbia, Montenegro, Slovenia, and Bosnia-Herzegovina. Yugoslavia split up because, it was not a homogeneous mixture of peoples. There were Serbs, Croats, Macedonians, and Slovenians who wanted their independence. Eventually, the inevitable civil war began with Slovenia and Croatia declared independence, soon after, Macedonia and Bosnia declared their independence. Eventually, all these countries gained their independence and Yugoslavia eventually became Serbia-Montenegro. Serbia-Montenegro eventually split in 2003 to form Serbia and Montenegro.
