Yes Sarah was a rude but that's her gimmick. In her stand-up comedy routines she frequently uses racial slurs and makes politically incorrect jokes.
I don't think there was anything wrong with the "cutest mistakes" remark. Sarah wasn't saying that she thinks the babies are mistakes. It was a reference to articles that claim Britney told the boys they were mistakes when she was upset once (see article by following the link below to MSNBC). Besides I know a lot of people who were originally "mistakes" (i.e. unplanned pregnancies) and they joke about it too.
Sarah Silverman wasn't outrageously rude but her big crime is that she wasn't very funny. Some of her more offensive material is hilarious if you aren't too uptight.

She has made a career of being innapropiate, rude and crass; but that was just low, sad, unnapropiate and rude comment.

yeah she was wayyyy inappropriate she went to far with the cutest mistakes comment that was stupid and not funny and like i said inaproppriate she wasnt even funny, the vmas were so bad this year they should never ever do anythign like that ever again it was a waste of my time

she was beyond rude I mean she wasn't even funny, and yes people should have a since of humor but c'mon saying she's glad 50 cent is alive is one thing but TALKING ABOUT SOMONE'S CHILDREN?! even if the mom is britany spears you don't do that!! If I was britany if would have been TWO fight last night. Because I would of beat her @$$ for talking about my kids.
