World Book Encyclopedia says the 13 colonies are usually thought of in 4 categories:
1-New England, or Northern (Conn, Mass, New Hampshire, Rhode Island)
2-Middle (Delaware, New Jersey, New York, Penn)
3-Chesapeake (Maryland, Virginia, N Carolina)
4-Southern (Georgia, S Carolina)
Some historians consider the Chesapeake Colonies to be part of the Southern Colonies, so that would make a clean separation between northern, central (middle) and southern.

This is subject to debate, but from my recollection, the Northern colonies are Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Connecticut, Rhode Island. The central colonies were New York, New Jersey, Delaware and Pennsylvania. The southern colonies were Maryland, Virginia, North and South Carolina, and Georgia.

colony name (year founded/seized by English settlers) founded by 1-Virginia (1607) London Company 2-Massachusetts (1620) Puritans 3-New Hampshire (1623) John Wheelwright 4-Maryland (1634) Lord Baltimore 5-Connecticut (1635) Thomas Hooker 6-Rhode Island (1636) Roger Williams 7-Delaware (1638) Peter Minuit and New Sweden Company 8-North Carolina (1653) Virginians 9-South Carolina (1663) Eight Nobles with a Royal Charter from Charles II 10-New Jersey (1664) Lord Berkeley and Sir George Carteret 11-New York (1664) Duke of York 12-Pennsylvania (1682) William Penn 13-Georgia (1732) James Edward Oglethorpe Alot of people seems to have alot of different answers but make sure those dates match up when the English settlers took over the colony from other Countries, for example - New York 1624 founded as New Netherland by the Dutch West India Company and was seized by the English in 1664 and renamed New York after the Duke of York which makes it an American (English) colony in 1664 not 1624. Yeah, I agree with the above answer, but I think Maryland is actually one of the middle colonies, not quite southern.
Edit: And by the above answer, I mean the first one. The second one is just ridiculous.
