The Oreck is made for an 85 year old man or woman who can't lift anything over 8 pounds. The Oreck does not pick well at all. The only thing you are paying for are Mr. Oreck's TV and Newspaper Ads. Not only that if you have no carpet then do NOT get the Oreck. That is what the OReck is made for and if you use the Oreck on your hard surfaces it will scratch your floors because the brushroll is always spinning and the metal base plate will I repeat will scratch your floors. Miele is the Best. It will pick up anything. If you want something that will cut down on the allergens there is only one true answer. Miele is the only truly HEPA certified vacuum cleaner, because you can put a HEPA filter on any vacuum but most just leak before the dirt even makes the HEPA filter so you are really just redistrubuting particles in your house. Don't believe me, check this out:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mxa0n0v2u...
You can see from this video that the Miele will trap all of the particles in a cloth like bag that self seals on its way out and you are actually purifying the air in your house by vacuuming! The Miele Callisto has an awesome SEB 217 Powerhead and it will pick up your pet hair (the model above that is made to pick up even more!). It has the best edge cleaning ever. If you use this vacuum to pick up bird seed on a carpeted floor along the edges of your wall it will pick up ever piece guarantee it. You can use the powerhead on the bare floor which does a wonderful job. It has a squeegee underneath to really seal to the ground as well as all rubber wheels that will not scratch your floors. But if you want to use an even nicer tool it comes with an SBB 300-3 Floorbrush which is amazing. It has super wide holes all around and it will pick every up as well. it barely feels like you are pushing anything and it has a knuckle which allows you to twist and turn into and spot you want like behind the toilets, buffet table, couches and the floorbrush itself is low enough to get under the baseboards and kickjams. The filtration is 99.95% effective at 0.3 microns which is amazing. Thanks to its HEPA filter and super intensive clean bags the vacuum is able to achieve this kind of filtration.
I bought my Miele Callisto from Mr. Vac and Mrs. Sew for only $699 with free shipping and no tax (because I do not live in new york). They were wonderful to deal with and they made my shopping experience a pleasant one. Here is their number (you have to call them up to get that price because that price can not be found anywhere on the Internet):

With out a questions Miele, when comparing vacuum cleaners
and these are what I look at :
1 quality : Miele by leaps and bounds is far better made
2 power: Again Miele by far this is base on air flow CFM while miele at 140 CFM cubic feet of air per minute Oreck under 100 CFM
3 Power brush : The power brush for canister make up of about 30 % of how well the vacuum system works things like the speed of the brush and the quality and design of the bristles meile is better quality
4 Filtration : again Meile out better with their sealed S-class
hepa filter system
Sebo Riccar and Miele are the top in these category's
my favorite is Sebo rated # 1 ten years straight over miele
out of Germany see review here http://sandyvac.com/miele/review-comparison.htm

Both are about $300-$500. Miele is vary well known becasue of their of their canisters. I have an Oreck upright, which people know of, not vary much canisters, and the oreck does a great job. But, Miele also can clean wood easyly, not oreck. I whould get a Miele.

I don't know much about the Oreck, but I have used a Miele at a client's house (I clean houses), and I sincerely don't like it. It's heavy and hard to move around. It's very difficult to do stairs with. And it overheats fairly quickly so you have to wait to finish until it cools down. At my house, we have a $40 Eureka. It does hardwood and carpet, and it works twice as well as the Miele.

If it were my choice, I would go with the Miele. All my friends who have the Oreck swear by it though. I find it noisier and it just doesn't suck up all of the peskie eskie hair as well as the Miele.

I had an Oreck and gave it away; it was useless. I bought a Eureka, which I like. I don't know anything about Miele.

As a carpet cleaner who uses a vacuum on every job I suggest the electrolux but if you can;t afford that one the Miele is your best bet. Have you checked out the Dyson awesome....

Don't trust Yahoo Answers for the one that suits your needs best. Go to the library and read the Consumer Reports tests. As I recall, the Oreck didn't fare too well but can't remember anything about the Miele.
I'd look it up for you but I'm away from home.

I recommend looking at a Dyson. We don't vacuum in our house anymore, we "dyson." Although pricey, we have never regretted the purchase. Although we do not have pets, we have the purple Dyson (DC 17 - Animal/upright) designed for pet-lovers, as it also helps with allergies. This upright works well on carpets and hardwood floors with a twist of a knob.
They sell canister vacuums as well. If the canisters are anything like the uprights, I would highly recommend them.
