I never would have pulled my son in the first place. I would have gone and observed practice, and tried to find out why it's scarier. Is it scary because the coach was talking about the games, how tough it was going to be? Was the coach a bully? I had a similar situation this year with my son and football. He begged to play, we signed him up with the condition "Once you start you have to finish it out, it's not fair to your team" He seriously wanted to quit, we're talking major crying tantrum for an hour, but we did not back down. I talked to the coaches, and explained his situation. They made sure to make him comfortable, cheer him on, and help him learn. They said it's really hard for alot of kids that first year in a sport. He finished out the year proud of himself for sticking it out. He started enjoying the sport alot more about 1/2 way through the season. It was his first year so it was hard. He's got auditory processing issues, so he didn't always know what to do, which made it harder. We did not want our son to learn "when the going gets tough, you can quit" or "when it's not fun anymore, you can quit" Not in the middle of something anyways. At the end of the season, if you don't want to play anymore, FINE! But you don't walk out in the middle of things. I would be more inclined to have my son return to the team, finish out the year and then let him decide if he wants to play again next year. It will make it easier for you to allow him to choose other sports to try. You know he'll stick it out, because that's what's expected.
