I would recommend soaking it in white vinegar and water or borax and water. Both of these are great deodorizers, so they won't just cover up the smell, like perfume, but remove it. Also, they they won't damage the ruler like bleach.

because the flexible ruler is made of a polymer plastic that can and will soak up smells just like your hair would soak up the smell of smoke.

My guess if it stinks and was in your back pocket... is that your butt stinks and you just aren't flexible enough to smell it for yourself.

I suggest you wash that thing... and by thing I mean butt or ruler... take your pick... better yet wash them both.

It will probably be cheaper just to buy a new ruler. But maybe put it in the washing machine. and enjoy the aroma of TIDE!

Soak it in vinegar. It's great for removing odors.

Soak it in vinegar, or baking soda & water or borax and water whatever you have on hand, none will damage the ruler.

Rub it all over with a freshly sliced lemon, then rinse and repeat as necessary. That should do it!
