how do you change the gear stick on bmw 3 series?

Whether it's automatic or manual, the gearknob will come off with a sharp tug upwards.

Are you just talking about the ball on top of the gear stick (manual trans) ??

If so, this just pulls straight up, yes, you must pull really hard.
