They did move to the Netherlands because at that time they did have more religious freedom here than they did at home. (Although I think the country was called Holland then.)
They left because a change in politics made the freedom less, or their particular view on the church less accepted.
Den Haag (the Hague,) has been the seat of the count of Holland for a long time, it became the gouvernmental seat when the princes of Holland allowed a gouvernment.
When the Netherlands became a country, the gouvernment stayed in the Hague, although it is not the capital city. (It did never have town rights.)
Since it did get more important national and international institutes that make it more important.

I'm not exactly sure what made you ask your question about why The Hague is so important, but if it's because you keep hearing about it in the news; It's because there are several important international institutions and organisations in The Hague, including the International Court of Justice, the Yugoslavia War Crimes Tribunal and the permanent war crimes court (although I'm not sure exactly how functional the latter is yet, there's opposition to it from the USA) as well as the headquarters of Europol (European FBI)

I hope this is the answer you were looking for, if not let us know!

1579 the union of utrecht declared that a person residing in the netherlands, could not be persecuted on teh basis of religios convictions. This was the first such act in the world, and it was followed by a wave of refuge protestants that faced persecution in other lands.
and the hague is important, because after the union of utrecht, the administrative council of the bataaf republic reigned from there. the kings residence was still amsterdam, and thus was the capitol.
