I don't know why the previous two to answer the question added parentheses around the "12 - 54" expression, but both of their answers are wrong.

is a common expression to help people learn and understand the order of operations. P = parentheses, E = exponents, M = Multiplication, D = division, A = addition, and S = subtraction. P comes first, then E, then M along with D, and A along with S are last.

The very first step is to look at the expression and see if there are any sets of parentheses. In this case, there are in this problem:

12 - 54 / [5 + 2(8 / 4)]

So, we'll start with [5 + 2(8 / 4)]. Again, there is a set of parentheses, so get rid of the operator within by dividing 8 by 4 like so:

12 - 54 / [5 + 2(2)]

Now the expression in parentheses has been reduced to [5 + 2(2)]. Since there are no exponents in the expression, multiplication and division comes next. Therefore, solve 2(2) and you get:

12 - 54 / [5 + 4]

To finish off the parentheses, simply add the remaining two numbers inside to get:

12 - 54 / [9]

Now that the expression in parentheses has been reduced to one number, you can drop them and you're left with:

12 - 54 / 9

Now you've gotten rid of all parentheses. There are also no exponents, so go straight to multiplication and division. The only one in existence is "54 / 9", so solve that to get:

12- 6

Now you're left with just addition and subtraction. Solve what you've got left, and your final answer should be:

6

@ Jamielee, i'm no longer quite particular vacationing to a food market and paying for a calculator is effortless experience by way of fact the gadget used to ask this question in all probability has a calculator geared up into it, and if it would not as a prior answerer has reported, you are able to google it, the two way would not require pointless commute or price.
