Ante meridian. Ante means before and meridian is when the sun is at its hightest point, and translates from Latin meridiem which means mid-day.

AM-ante meridian
PM-post meridian (after noon)

So a.m. covers from immediately after midnight to immediately before mid-day.

And p.m. from immediately after mid-day round to midnight again.
