I have collected coins for over 47 years and have some that are really not worth a lot but I like them. On the other hand I have a lot that are worth a lot of money and you know I still like the historic non expensive ones better. I too along the line bought U.S. first day covers here and there, but only on the secondary market where they are cheap. They are not as rare as the promoters what us to believe. It matters not what the value is, if it is fun to collect them do so. You need to remember ther are true collectors then there are investors, investors won't touch first day coves for profit means more to them than the item or its history. Nothing is a waste of money if it is enjoyed and you lean something.

Are you asking if this is a wrong opinion? There are two trains of thought here: 1) If you are buying them purely to make some quick money then yes they are only worth the cover price but this still does make them worthless 2) To see returns you will need to keep them in proper dust covers, unsealed (this is really important) for 20-30 years. Then you will have opportunity to sell your collection as that, a collection or maybe individual covers to complete a set. As an example I recently sold a 1978 Christmas cover for £68.

I collected first day covers for years for the UK, Isle of Man, Jersey and Guernsey. I collected them purely because I liked them and enjoyed receiving them. Now, I have moved onto new hobbies and have all these fdcs sitting in my cupboard gathering dust and although I've tried to sell them - nobody is interested. I've even tried eBay and found there are hundreds for sale. So I suppose they are indeed worthless but I don't consider them a waste of money because I enjoyed them at the time.

It's a hobby so have fun with it becasue you certainly won't get rich. from it. Generally speaking, older and higher denomination stamps that few people ever bought to begin with appreciate /have appreciated much more in value than the more common lower priced denominations that most people use. First day covers are pretty but I'm willing to bet that in the future the unused counterpart stamps will be worth more than the same cancelled stamps on the FD covers.

Collect them if you like them. If you're collecting for money or profit you may as well collect money.

as long as you enjoy them they are not worthless, but if you tried to sell them you wouldn't get much for them.
