The moon is much smaller than the earth. The sun on the other hand is far bigger than all the planets including their moons put together.

To give you a few approximate figures, the diameter of the moon is about 3,400 km, the diameter of the earth is about 12,600 km and the diameter of the sun is about 1,200,000 km.

The reason the sun and moon look the same size is because the sun is about 93 million miles away and the moon is only about 240,000 miles away.

The diameter of all of these bodies varies depending upon whether you measure through the equator or the poles.

Du'h the sun, the moon's diameter is 3476km and the sun's diameter is 1392000km. You might think the moon is bigger because the Sun is further away from the Earth than the moon.

The Sun is 1.4 MILLION KMs in diameter.
The Moon is 3473 KMs in diameter (only slightly more than 1/4 the diameter of the Earth!)

The sun is much larger than the moon. 400 times larger in fact, but by odd coinsidence the sun is also 400 times further away than the moon. This oddity is what allows Earth to have total solar eclipses.
I hope this helps. Good luck.

the sun is 400 times bigger than the moon which is 400 times nearer to the earth.

That is why the moon fits exactly over the sun during an eclipse.

Cool!

This is a relative question. From our frame of reference, the moon is bigger. But we all know the sun is more massive and definitely has a larger diameter.

The SUN !!!
However from the Earth it looks the same size simply because it is further away from the Earth than the Moon.
