rite what im trting to find out is... as chlorine is in the 7th group in the periodic table it has 7 electrons in its outer shell which means to gain a full outer shell it needs one more electron so does this mean in electrolysis chlorine wouls be attracted to the cathode to gain its extra electron....or have i got that totaly wrong?

In electrolysis the starting material will be the anion(chloride - Cl-)
The chloride anion will migrate towards to the anode (+ve terminal). Hence releasing its electron onto the anode, and itself becoming chlorine gas.
