I am a junior in college and have had my betta, Rodney, for two years. He literally lights up my life. I love all animals as well, but at school we aren't allowed to have pets unless they are aquatic. Bettas are great fish because they are so colorful, and many of them have their own personalities.
Rodney only flares up when I purposely antagonize him (which is very seldom...usually my roommate does it, and then I smack her). Whenever it's feeding time, he flits around his bowl and shows off for me. He also has a plant that he loves to swim through.
Females can sometimes be kept together, if the tank is big enough, but yes, males should be kept separately. The good thing about this is that you can concentrate on only one fish.
I guess what I'm saying is that, if you are blessed with a great betta, like I am with Rodney, you can't help but love him. :)

I like them because of the different colors, and the different tail varieties that are on the market now. Plus, they have "attitude".
If yours wasn't very active, you may not have had the best set-up for it. Even through they're capable of breathing surface air, they'll do better in a tank (at least 2.5 gallons) with a filter and heater (they're tropical, so do best if the water temperature is at least 76o-86o) - they might survive in unheater bowls, but they don't thrive.
I keep mine in mini-bows (2.5 or 5 gallon) with a heater and filter, natural colored gravel, a piece of driftwood, and two live or silk plants. They're aways swimming around, and come to the glass when I'm nearby. I've given them some tankmates as well (snails, shrimp) so they have something else with which they can interact. In a larger tank, you can keep males with other fish (just not other bettas), just so long as they aren't aggressive, or have flowing fins so that might be mistaken for another betta. You can also keep multiple females together, as long as you have at least 3.

I love bettas because when given proper care they can be amazing fish with a great personality.
A beta does'nt just "sit there when given proper care.
To me proper care is when the fish is kept in a tank of 2.5 gallons plus. This tank should be heavily planted with a mix of silk and real plants.
Then add a haeter and fdeed the fish a mix of live food and regular beta flakes.
Then decide if you think beta are boring
I used to think that too!
Then my friend showed me a real beta tank
and I'm, in love!

I think because they are so pretty. I however object to keeping them in those tiny aquariums. I mean how would you like that? It is cruel.
I kept mine in a 40 gallon aquarium, with a divider. I had two of them. They never paid any attention to each other. I kept guppies in with them and never had a problem.
But honestly what do you want the fish to do? They are fish and that is all they know. :)

Bettas really shouldn't be in bowls, they sorta just sit there cuz theres no room to swim.
In a 5g tank a betta is a very active fish, they swim about exploring their territory and actually develop puppy like personalities.

Let me just start by saying I love all animals too. But from what I have seen down here where I live no one likes those stupid little fish, simply because they don't do anything!
