Never in my life have I heard "music" that was so down-trodden and lifeless. That was depression on audio: three (badly played) power chords, no vocals to speak of, and lyrics to make you want to jump off a bridge.

Rock'n'roll is supposed to be fun.

Yeah, I hated Nirvana... always have, always will.

Kurt Cobain was a decent songwriter, but by no means was he a guitar virtuoso

Dave Grohl, on the other hand, has proven that he can do more than drum in an alt-rock 3-piece

but, yeah, as a metaller, I was never TOO fond of Nirvana, and can think of plenty of other bands with more raw talent

but don't try to convince the adolescents of the mid-nineties, or you will be arguing with a wall

LOL, this is a loaded question. I don't think Nirvana was the best band in the world, and Kurt didn't have the best voice. But alot of their songs are fun to listen and sing along to. And I agree with what "beautifulirishgirl" said. I think Alice in Chains was a better band than Nirvana too. But hey, that's just me. =)

That might be a little harsh, but considering bands like Social Distortion, Rancid, Bad Religion, The Descendents, and The Vandals were around then, I don't see what made Nirvana revolutionary. They just slowed down punk music. Even Dave Grohl still recognizes Nirvana was born out of that scene.
I still like their music though.

The best thing about Nirvana was that the world was introduced to Dave Grohl (who is a true musical genius in my opinion).

I liked Nirvana initially, but I saw them live in London once and Kurt just didn't give a ****, he was just mumbling and acting like a spoilt brat. People paid good money and traveled to see him perform, and he completely disrespected them.

I quite like Nirvana and consider them to be very talented. However, Alice in Chains was better. It's too bad they never got the accolades Nirvana did.

I thought I saw this question a few days ago...

Nirvana wasn't the best grunge group, but they helped bring more grunge bands mainstream...Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam. Soundgarden. It's just that they get way too much hype for what they did and just one song. Fans can be annoying at times, but hey, in the end, it's still damn good music.

Alot of people have said that and I don't agree 100%, they were a great band and I'm not naive enough to say they didn't become bigger once kurt died. I think they were a good band that should be remembered , the reason some people think they are overrated is because the media hyped up way to much, which is something Kurt Cobain constantely complained about.

Don't blame them, blame the media

And acutally, I'm with fonzie on this one, what are you basing your comment on?

They got more popular since Kurt died? Well, every artist gets more popular when they die at a young age. It's called preserving a legacy that ended too soon. Hendrix, Lennon, Tupac, etc., have sold more records and made more money since they died. Nirvana brought something new to the music scene. They ended all that bullshit hair metal, and they're still better than half of these pretty-boy emo bands. Give respect where it's due.

I think they're pretty overrated. They're not a bad band, and some of their songs are actually good, but how they are revolutionary and top "greatest" lists is beyond me. Kurt Cobain isn't exactly one of the greatest guitarists ever, and "Smells Like Teen Spirit", as influential as that one song is, really isn't as good as people think it is, although I'll admit it's one of the few Nirvana songs I listen to.

They were great!!!!! And they were already great before Kurt died. The only thing I didn't like about them, was so many sound a like copy cat bands started up. And that killed Heavy Metal. Everybody wanted to sound like Nirvana.
