You can certainly add additional tiles to an existing word to make a new word.
So, if the word was "STYLE", you could add "re" for "restyle", "s" for "styles", or "d" for "styled".
For scoring, any 'bonus' spaces apply ONLY if the new tiles are played on them. In the example above, if there is a "Double Word" spaced under the word "style", it does not apply by adding new letters, but if you played the "re", "s", or "d" letters on a bonus space, then the bonus does apply.

There are five different ways that new words can be formed:
1. Adding one or more tiles to the beginning or end of a word already on the board, or to both the beginning and end of that word.
e.g. Trainer can become Strainers if you have two tiles with the letter S.
2. Placing a word at right angles to a word already on the board. The new word must use one of the letters of the word already on the board. Note, a right angle can be _| or |_
3. Placing a complete word parallel to a word already played so that adjoining tiles also form complete words.
4. A new word added at right angles can also add a letter to an existing word.
5. The last variation is to bridge two or more letters. (This can only be done after the fourth move or later in the game).
**you cannot add two tiles on an existing word and on the same turn build a word at a right angle to just-added-on word
As far as scoring:
6) Letter and word premiums count only on the turn in which they are played. On later turns, letters already played on premium squares count at face value.

Am I Bluffin'?? and Wundt have given you most of the answer. The other thing that you can do is build a different word in the other direction and score both words. Example:
You have the word STYLE going across. You can add the word DRESS going down and make the word STYLED going across.
You score the word STYLED, just the points (no doubles or triples) and the word DRESS, here you can cont the doubles & triples.
This and using all seven letters is how you really score big in scrabble.

Yes, you can add tiles to an existing word. You will get points for all the letters in the word, not just your additions. However, you will not be eligible for any "double word score" or anything like that.

No matter how you twist it or turn it unpurse is not allowed for a scrabble word as no dictionary recognizes it even Yahoo spell check gives a misspelling. Sorry about those 51 points it would of been nice.

A SCORING CLARIFICATION-
You score the bonuses for ANY tiles you ADD to the board, for example, in the case where you play DRESS and also make STYLED, if a the D is on a bonus spot, it DOES score the bonus- twice- once for each new or changed word it appears in.
